It’s HOT! Summer Finally Hit Dana Point!

July came in with a BANG in more ways than one! We went from lounging in the yard BBQ’ing with my neighbors Corrie and Ron (the ones I spy on 😂) on July 4 to a full on heat wave July 6! I mean a HEAT WAVE!   Temps went from  80° to 100° in Dana POINT in one day And it did not cool off until late at night!  That’s RUFF! Please be sure to take extra care and precautions with your pets during your HOT Days and Months!

Scooby’s Summer Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool

Stay in the AC if Possible!

If you REALLY need to go on a SHORT walk during the hottest days,  go super early in the morning or late in the afternoon/evening when It’s the coolest). Stay in the Shade if you do go out!

Beware! Hot Pavement, Sidewalks and SAND!

Tell your humans to walk barefoot first to see if it’s too hot for their feet. If it’s too hot for their feet, it’s way too hot for your feet. Walk on the grass instead!

If you MUST walk on pavement or concrete, ask your humans to buy you some boots so you don’t burn your feet.

WATER! You can NEVER Have Too Much!

ALWAYS HAVE WATER WITH YOU EVERYWHERE YOU GO! Take more than you think you need! If your dog needs a bowl to drink from, buy a collapsible water bowl. You do not want to be somewhere when the dog needs water and you don’t have any

GET WET!

Swim and play in the water! My favorite thing is to wade through all the streams and lakes when we are in the mountains! Unfortunately, we don’t have streams, lakes or a pool in my yard so if I get super hot mom pours water on my back or gently hoses me down so I cool off quickly.   This works with the water bottle as well if you’re out and about and it gets too hot.  This is another reason why you always want extra water at hand.

P.S. Some Dogs really like a plastic baby pool! It’s worth a try and not very expensive.

Organic Non-Toxic Baby Wipes

Wiping your pup down with baby wipes (don’t forget the feet for extra cool-down) can help cool your dog down quickly too. We keep them in the car and next to my bed. Perfect for a pre-bedtime cool-down!

Point a Fan Towards Pet Beds

A constant breeze really helps!

NEVER! Leave your Pets Cars!

The only exception to this rule is if your humans leave the car ON with the AC ON (with the doors locked for your protection), for a VERY SHORT time! Sometimes Mom runs in the store and leaves me in the nice AC listening to my favorite tunes!

HEAT SICKNESS

Your pets can get heat sickness just like humans. If they are showing signs of heat exhaustion such as lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, or anything unusual, take them to the vet right away. Better to be safe than sorry.

Last but not Least: It’s OK to do Nothing!

It’s OK to lounge around and not exert yourself until it cools down. Mom says I’m the King of Lounge 😆

Have a Fun Summer and Stay cool out there!
