Navigating the Death of Your Beloved Pet – In Memory of Scooby

Scooby Smith

I am by no means a Theologian, Monk, Priest, Pastor or Psychologist but I know the pain of losing your best fur friend, fur son, fur daughter, fur co-pilot and important fur family member. It’s part of being a pet owner and quite frankly, the worst part. Saying our earthly goodbye is one of the hardest things we will experience.

Each loss is different but what they all have in common is PAIN. Emotional pain, Psychological pain, Physical pain, Heartbreaking Tears…and just PAIN to your core. Saying my earthly goodbye this year to Scooby, my best fur friend, protector, son and beloved brother to Zachy and Lovey left me feeling like I had just walked out a war zone numb and dazed. I didn’t want to go to sleep without our beddyby routine or wake up without his happy tail wag when he opened his eyes and saw me. I felt like a zombie just going through the motions and crying myself to sleep each night as I know many of you have felt and understand much too well.

The Holiday Season is fast approaching and for many, the loss of your furry loved ones is heightened. This year alone so many of our Fwiends around the world are experiencing the same pain with their fur family members who are also suffering life-threatening illnesses, cancer diagnoses and death. I just read that one more of my very special facebook friends had to say their last goodbye yesterday. I’ve felt like a distant part of their fur family for years and tears just poured down my face knowing it was the last time I would see that special fur face and knowing what her Mommy is going through. I see all of you struggling to get through it too. My heart goes out to each and every one of you.

Scooby’s blog put me and Scooby in the middle of the most amazing social media group of pet lovers who have one BIG thing in common…WE LOVE OUR FUR FAMILY MEMBERS! It’s been an invaluable network of FWIENDS around the world who share their love for their pets, care about each other, understand our joy and pain and who want to be a part of each others journeys through thick and thin. I could have never imagined the amazing connections we all now share back when Scooby and I began Hiking, Adventuring and Sharing our destinations, stories and photos so we could encourage others to do the same. The outpouring of cheers and love through Scooby’s life and now as my Scooby Angel has been so special. Thank you!
