It’s Memorial Day and what better time to remember my Best Friend and Fur Son, Scooby, who flew over the Rainbow Bridge with gigantic turbo
angel wings on March 28, 2019 at age 14 1/2 years. (I posted more about this on Scooby’s Instagram and Facebook). It was unexpected and it’s taken time to find the words BIG enough, LOVING enough and GRATEFUL enough to encompass what Scooby brought into my life. It’s honestly impossible but here goes…
I adopted Scooby from Friends for Pets in the Summer when he was 8 years young. I read his story a few days after Diane rescued him and knew deep inside that I MUST meet him. The day I met Scooby was the first day of our furever lives together. He ran out, sat on my foot, loaded up in the car and stuck his head out the window for the entire drive home in So Cal traffic. I was completely unprepared – no dog food or treats and was praying he’d be ok with cats because nobody knew! Scooby’s heart was big and his soul was deep. Scooby, with his smile and zest for life, quickly learned that he LOVED his new life as Sable’s successor and as Big Brother to his new Cat Siblings Zachy and Lil’ sister Lovey who adored him in return.
Scooby also learned that he LOVED going on walks near the ocean, searching for flowers & birds, being in nature and chasing sunsets with Mom. He needed special care because he had physical limitations due to years of little to no exercise. Scooby did not let that dampen his spirit. With each outing we slowly began strengthening his legs and by the Fall we were on our first road trip to…you guessed it…Mammoth! We walked, we hiked, we relaxed and had an amazing time! Little did we know that we were at the very beginning of a beautiful “Scooby and Mom” life of adventure!
We were on our next doggy vacation by Spring, this time RV “glamping”. During this trip I learned that Scooby’s weak hind legs couldn’t get him up the tiny RV stairs. But, not to worry, Scooby’s charm won over new “fwiends” everywhere we went. On the first day, Scooby melted the hearts of a retired couple who were super campers! They loved Scooby so much that we combined food and cooked dinner together every night. Afterwards they would walk us to our RV in the pitch dark (with their big flashlight) and we’d hoist Scooby into the RV for bedtime! Scooby loved his new fwiends! We kept touch via email and they told me they loved Scooby so much they adopted a dog soon after meeting Scooby!
It was so much fun searching for the next epic dog-friendly adventure! We were returning with so many amazing photos that Scooby’s Aunts and Uncles thought that Scooby should have a blog so other pup families could experience Scooby’s Adventures! By our 2 year paw-versary, WhatsScoobyDoing.com was launched! The response to Scooby’s blog and social media was amazing! With his zest for adventure and life, Scooby unwittingly became an ambassador for Rescue Dogs, Senior Dogs, Special Needs Dogs, Weimaraners, Adventuring Dogs, Hiking Dogs, Yoga Dogs and most importantly in his daily life as a Cat Loving Dog. Last year, Scooby also became another ambassador – this time for Dogs with Cancer. When Scooby was diagnosed with canine lymphoma at age 13 and while undergoing chemo, well wishes poured in from Scooby’s Fwiends around the world – many saying that Scooby’s fight inspired them to keep up their fight as well. Zach, Lovey and I took care of our boy during his treatments and Scooby quickly went into remission and went on even more amazing adventures for almost another year!
So much love in so little time for our fur family. We only had 6 years together but we lived a lifetime of experiences as Dog Mom & Son and Doggy Big Brother. Scooby started a whole new life at the age of 8 as a senior pup! I have so many beautiful memories and thousands of photos and for that, I am forever grateful. Scooby is a testament to LIVING Life – limitations and all, to your FULLEST potential. Scooby showed us love, trust and the joys of pet adoption and adventuring with our fur kids.
Thank you for loving Scooby and thank you for being a part of our extended fur family. He was so deserving of it. Scooby’s big heart, silliness, wiseness, braveness and love for adventure brought so many smiles to so many hearts, most especially mine. Scooby would want every person, cat, dog, rescue dog, senior dog, animal and fur family to live theScoobyLife of Love, Health, Fun and Adventure in his honor. It’s only befitting for WhatsScoobyDoing to now become TheScoobyLife to Celebrate my boy.
You, Scooby’s community of Fwiends, are so very special. I hope Scooby’s light continues to brighten your hearts! I’ve opened up comments on every page in his blog. I invite you to share your photos and adventures from wherever you are with TheScoobyLife community to help spread the word all about all the amazing dog-friendly adventures waiting to be had!
Thank you Scooby for trusting, loving and inspiring me and so many others,
XOXO,
Mom
P.S. If you want to celebrate your pet, we’ve created a new Celebrate your Pet so you can celebrate your fur kid too!
I am so sorry to hear about Scooby. It is such a tough thing but hold on to the memory of how awesome a life you have Scooby for all those years. Sending hugs!
Thank you Lori. I miss Scooby so much. I hope to make it up soon to see your winery, drink some vino and hug Vegas. Scooby will be with us in spirit because he just loved a great road trip! Oh, and to take lot’s of pretty photos. Happy Memorial Day!
