Mandarins are a small citrus tree fruit which are a hybrid of tangerines and is a species of orange. According to genetic studies, the mandarin was one of the original citrus species! Mandarins are one of the core ancestral citrus taxa, and are thought to have evolved in regions including South China and Japan in East Asia, and Vietnam in Southeast Asia. According to the AKC, Yes! Dogs can eat oranges! Oranges are good source for vitamin C for immunity, potassium, and fiber and are low in sodium. The juicy flesh of any orange (without seeds) can be a healthy snack for your dog but limit to one or two segments per day. Some dogs may not like the citrusy smell of oranges so if they don’t eat it plain you can break up a segment and add it to their food. Or, completely skip oranges if your dog doesn’t enjoy them!

Orange peels are non-toxic but the oils in orange peels can turn off a picky dog. Orange peels are hard on your dog’s digestive system or even worse, become lodged in their digestive track and cause an obstruction. So, Do Not offer your pup orange peels.
Can Dogs Have Orange Juice?
Fruit juices such as orange juice are full of sugar and have no fiber. The high sugar content can creat health issues in diabetic dogs and potentially create sugar reaction in all dogs so skip giving your dog orange juice.
In Summary…Are Oranges Safe for Dogs?
In general the inside flesh of mandarins, tangerines, clementines and oranges in general are non-toxic to dogs. It is best to serve your pup only one or two seedless orange segments at a time. Do not serve your dog orange peels or orange juice as they could create health hazards. Observe your pup after eating an orange segment and if they have any adverse reaction then do not feed your pup citrus as a treats. If your dog does not enjoy the strong, citrus orange smell just skip oranges as a treat.
