Today Mom had a craving for Chinese Chikin (she does’t eat meat) Salad. It did look pretty yummy. All she was missing was some cronchy chow mein noodles and cilantro – which she just put on the grocery list for tomorrow for round 2 of Chinese Chikin Salad! Mom’s salad is pretty simple…lettuce, spinach, mandarin oranges, cilantro, broccoli sprouts, spicy sesame oil, coconut aminos, crunchy chow mein noodles and…celery! Since we have a whole stalk of the stuff, mom wondered, Can Dogs Eat Celery?

Is Celery Poisonous to Dogs?

So, is celery poisonous to dogs? Mom was happy to learn that Celery is NOT poisonous to dog and that Dogs CAN Eat Celery! According to the AKC Celery is “often recommended as a weight-loss treat. Celery is very low in fat and cholesterol and is an excellent source of fiber; vitamins A, C, and K; folate; potassium; and manganese”.

Celery is crunchy which is also fun and may help freshen up your dog’s breath! So…guess what we had as a “food topper” for dinner? You guessed it! CELERY! Mom sliced up a piece of celery and we split it between the three of us! Mom also added a very small amount of lettuce and broccoli sprouts as our food topper! So, Apawarently we had a little salad on top of our regular food! It was Yummers! We woofed it all down – pun intended! You can read more about lettuce, broccoli and arugula in our blog post!

As with any new food, you should always check with your vet regarding your individual pets needs and heath. Anytime you do introduce new, dog safe foods to your pup start with very small amounts to make sure it agrees with your pup’s digestive system!

Important! Celery CAN be a choking hazard for your dog so be sure to chop celery into small, bite-size pieces!

Did you notice we did NOT have spinach as a food topper? While spinach does have several health properties, it’s also controversial according to the AKC and experts because it can damage your pup’s kidneys. We don’t think it’s worth that risk so we say SKIP Spinach!
