Can Dogs Eat Apple Cores?
The AKC also warns to not allow your dogs to eat the seeds or the core of an apple to dogs as they contain a small amount of cyanide. Apple cores and seeds may also present a choking hazard or intestinal obstruction.
Can Dogs Eat Apples with Skin?
Although apple peels contain good fiber for both you and your dog, apple peels or skins can get caught in your dog’s teeth. So, it’s best to serve your dog peeled apples.

YES! Dogs CAN Eat Applesauce but it needs unsweetened with no other ingredients but apples and water – which is the tricky part. Apples are an excellent source of vitamins A and C and fiber for both you and your dog and potentially have many other health benefits which are also being researched. Apples are low in protein and fat, making them a great snack for senior dogs. Puppies can even eat apples but only in small amounts. Apples are also higher in sugar so it’s important to not over consume – especially for dogs!
Apples also have another bonus…crunching into apples can clean and even whiten your and your pup’s teeth! Don’t substitute apples for routing brushing and cleaning of teeth, however!
Can Dogs Eat Green Apples?
The color of the apple isn’t important. Dogs can eat green, red and pink apples!
How Much Apple Can I Give My Dog?
Just an apple slice or two or a few cubes is enough depending on the size of your pup. You can also freeze them and provide them as a chilled treat!
Can Apples Upset a Dog’s Stomach?
Apples can cause digestive problems such as vomiting or diarrhea for dogs and puppies so start with only a slice or cube. If your dog does have a digestive problem after eating apple pieces, contact your vet to be safe.
Tips for Serving Apples to Dogs
- Choose Organic (Supermarket apples are laden with pesticides and bacteria)
- Wash Before Serving (soap and water or white vinegar)
- Remove the Peels / Skin (Peels can get stuck in your dog’s teeth)
- Cut Into Small Pieces (Small cubes or slices will prevent choking and obstructions)
- In Dog-Friendly Recipes
- Applesauce should be organic, unsweetened with only water as a secondary ingredient
- Freeze Apple Pieces, Slices and Applesauce for chilled treats
Important Reminders
Be sure to remove the seeds and core before feeding your pups apples. Removing the skin is also best if possible.
