Can Tap Water Make My Dog Sick?

This Answer Depends on What and How Many Chemicals are in YOUR Water Supply!

For instance, water near agricultural areas may contain harmful organic chemical materials from pesticide or fertilizers which may increase cancer risk, reproductive problems and can impair eye, liver, kidney, and other body functions. Similar problems can result from exposure to water near industrial plants.

Some common waterborne contaminants include:
  • Aluminum
  • Ammonia
  • Arsenic
  • Barium
  • Cadmium
  • Chloramine
  • Chromium
  • Copper
  • Fluoride
  • Bacteria & Viruses
  • Lead
  • Nitrates/Nitrites
  • Mercury
  • Perchlorate
  • Radium
  • Selenium
  • Silver
  • Uranium

Emergency Water Concerns

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agrees…while less frequent – water emergencies DO happen…earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornados and other man-made and natural disasters can cause water main breaks or localized flooding which could contaminate your drinking water.

Other “silent” emergencies happen as well – for example, the Flint Michigan water crisis from 2014 to 2019 when the drinking water was contaminated with lead and Legionnaires’ disease – which severely affected humans and pets.

Other Potential Tap Water Concerns

The EPA’s Office of Water (OW) is also concerned about potential neurotoxic chemicals that can leach into drinking water from PVC pipes.

Also, there are other already existing toxins that are being considered as candidates for listing as significant water contaminants. For example, increased detection of cyanotoxin in drinking water has fueled the need for health effects research.

Keep in mind these are all concerns for HUMANS! Can you imagine how our beloved dogs, cats and pets may be affected when exposed to these toxic chemicals? If you’re like Mom, you view our beloved pets and wildlife as modern day canaries in coal mines. (They are so sensitive that chemicals endanger them before humans).
